How we work with the auto sector

What an automotive ancillary needs from a stockist.

Automotive component manufacturers — gear-makers, transmission ancillaries, engine-component suppliers, bearing units — work to two pressures that the steel supplier has to solve: fatigue-life integrity on every bar, and predictable supply across OEM build schedules. Both come back to the same answer: clean material, on time, with paperwork that holds up.

Our case-hardening stock (EN353, 20MnCr5, SAE 8620, EN36C) covers the gear and shaft side of the line. Our through-hardening alloy stock (EN19, EN24, AISI 4140) covers the highly-stressed shafts, connecting rods and high-strength fasteners. EN31 covers the bearing side. And every bar — every order, no exceptions — ships with an EN 10204 Type 3.1-equivalent MTC and an ASTM A388 UT pass report, both keyed to the heat number for full traceability.

This matters because in automotive QA, the certificate is not optional. Incoming inspection wants the document before the bar lands. We work that way by default.

Carburised spur, helical and bevel gears — the heart of every gearbox. Demand a hard, wear-resistant case over a tough core.

Heavily loaded rotating parts with complex stress patterns. Need high tensile strength, good toughness and clean internals.

Axle & drive shafts

Long, large-diameter shafts that transmit torque under shock loading. Through-hardening alloy is the standard call.

Connecting rods & pins

High-cycle fatigue parts. Either heat-treated alloy or case-hardened depending on configuration.

Bearings & bushes

Engine, wheel and transmission bearings — fatigue-critical, where internal cleanliness directly determines L10 life.

Steering & suspension pins

Loaded in shock and wear. Case-hardening grades give a wear-resistant skin over a tough, fatigue-resistant core.

Automotive parts fail through fatigue, and fatigue starts at internal inclusions. Ultrasonic examination on every bar is exactly the right kind of insurance for this sector.

Which grades are most commonly used in the automobile industry?

For carburised gears and shafts: EN353, 20MnCr5, SAE 8620 and EN36C. For high-tensile shafts, connecting rods and high-strength bolts: EN19 (AISI 4140) and EN24 (AISI 4340). For bearings, bearing rings, balls and rollers: EN31 (52100 / 100Cr6 / SUJ2). For dies and tool-room use within auto ancillaries: D2, H13 and OHNS.

Do you supply directly to OEMs or only via ancillaries?

Both. We supply Tier-1 and Tier-2 automotive ancillaries directly, and also serve as the steel source for component manufacturers building parts for OEMs. For OEM customers we offer annual contracts and scheduled call-offs against forecast volumes.

Why is ultrasonic testing important for automotive steel?

Most automotive failures in service start at sub-surface inclusions or cavities in the steel — defects that ordinary inspection cannot see. ASTM A388 ultrasonic examination screens each bar for these defects before dispatch. For fatigue-critical parts like bearings, gears and crankshafts, it is the single most important quality step.

Can you provide third-party witnessed test certificates for OEM contracts?

Yes. Our standard certificate is EN 10204 Type 3.1 equivalent. For OEM contracts that require third-party witness — typically for export or high-criticality applications — we can arrange EN 10204 Type 3.2 equivalent documentation. Specify on the inquiry.

What lead time do you offer on bulk automotive orders?

For stocked grades and sizes, same-day quote and dispatch within 3 to 7 days is typical. For scheduled call-offs against an annual contract, we dispatch on the agreed cycle. For non-stock items or large forged sections, we give a realistic lead time at the quotation stage.
